• 본 논문은 김기영 영화들의 특성을 살펴보고, 그의 대표작인 「하녀」 연작 분석을 통해서 인물들의 욕망의 양상과 근대화 시기에 내재된 공포의 요소에 대해서 고찰한 것이다. 김기영 감독은 1990년대에 컬트 영화 감독으로서 재발견되었다. 1960년대 흥행 감독으로 알려졌던 김기영이 ‘컬트’ 감독으로서 다시금 부상한 것은 1990년대 당시 사회·문화적 조건과 영화사의 측면에서 그 의미가 파악된다. 김기영 감독이 컬트 감독이 된 사회·문화적 현상의 이면에는 기성세대와는 다른 것을 추구하고자 하는 젊은 비디오 매니아들이 있었기 때문에 가능했다. 그리고 한국 영화사를 살펴보았을 때 리얼리즘에 경도된 우리나라 영화계에서 주목받았던 영화들은 역사적 배경을 드러내는 예술 영화나 사실주의 드라마가 대부분이었다. 그러나 김기영의 영화는 리얼리즘으로 재편되었던 한국 영화사의 흐름을 더욱 다양하게 바라볼 수 있는 지점을 제시해준다. 김기영의 영화들은 하나의 장르로 파악할 수 없다. 그는 영화 안에서 멜로드라마와, 공포, 서스펜스 등의 다양한 장르들을 혼합시키고 있다. 리얼리즘적인 요소와 비현실적이고 환상적인 비리얼리즘적인 요소가 서로 상충하면서 내러티브가 전개되도록 하는 것이 바로 김기영이 장르들을 혼합하는 방식이다. 그렇기 때문에 김기영 영화들은 김기영만의 장르 영화라고 보는 것이 적절하다. 이것은 김기영 영화가 다른 멜로 드라마나 호스티스물과의 관계 속에서 태어났지만, 구체적인 상황의 전개에서는 다른 영화들이 아무런 반성없이 사용하고 있는 관습을 뒤집어 보여주는 데에서 비롯되는 것이다. 「하녀」는 액자식 구성으로 되어 있다. 김기영 감독은 이렇게 편집상 주요 내용을 가운데 두고, 전반부와 후반부의 내용을 끼어 넣음으로써 관객들에게 영화에...
