One of the Rookies

I D/L seti@home again and also the CLI file. Started over lost a days work.
Is there any settings that have to be made?
Setup\Display I checked minimize to tray and run in tray. Remember window positions already checked.
Client: idle timeout set to 5 min and poll interval at 1 sec.
Under Client Configure there isn't a thing showing.
I can't understand why they say remove seti@home it this CLI looks for it in the first place.
Anyway, I am starting over. Still have the old file on another Drive.

What are you trying to do? Run the cli or gui? What other programs to you want to run with it?

I just reread your first post and you said you d/l seti@ home and the cli again. Now if you mean seti@home as in the gui(screen saver version) you do not need it to run the cli version. What will happen is seti will be running twice and take twice as long or longer. Do you want to run the screensaver or the cli?

That is correct. I did turned off the screensaver. Going back I removed the GUI Seti@home from the computer and all this crap started to go haywire.
This is what I did before:

"If you've already got the Graphical (GUI) version loaded it's going to have to be un-installed which you can do from the control panel. Once it's been un-installed you'll more than likely still be left with the Seti@home directory within your program files folder. Don't worry about it. You can delete it. If there is a unit in there, it will not be lost, it will be re-allocated to another user."

So after un-installing the GUI it will leave the Seti@home directory.

I don't think I did anything else. I'm a rookie here but not with a PC.
Thanks for your helping.

For the third time, now found the D/L for the CLI, just didn't scroll down far enough the last time. This program opens in a DOS version, if it is the correct one. Now I have a DOS SETI 1 sitting in my status tray.
I also have the SetiSpy and Seti Driver.
It started out and wen into idle and that is where it is laying (idle).
Not what I would call user friendly. Can't say I'm not trying.
If anyone is willing to tell me what/where the problem lays, it will be surely appreciated.
thank you

We will be happy to help set you up!!!!;) There are many variables here and without more information it is hard to tell what is causing the problem.

1) Did you go through MeeToo's description of how to set up the CLI, SetiSpy, and Seti Driver together. If not I would recommend it.

2) Did you download the "i386-winnt-cmdline.exe" version of the CLI from one of the Download Mirrors? If it is for another OS or computer type that could be the problem.

3) Also, are the CLI, Seti Driver, and SetiSpy all in the same folder?

If you can say yes to all three of these then we can start tweaking individual settings. Let us know!;)

I am happy to say, done all of those things. But more than happy to say MgKnight just called, did a little tweaking and got it crunching away. Seems to be going great now. A thumbs up for MgKnight.
BTW, thank you for the help anyway

Lou, welcome! Great to see you finding a home here One of the Rookies - Team Starfire (19)
MgKnight did the same thing for me and have been running fine (another round of applause for Bill!!!)
Now all you need is Overhill's Seti Cache Spy to look at the WU if you want. Neat program even if I did break it once One of the Rookies - Team Starfire (20)
BTW- we learned from experience here to have about a week's worth of WU cached. There was a construction cable cutting accident at Berkley a while ago and the frustration we felt as we ran out of WU to crunch.... When you have a feel for how many WU you can do in 5 days, make sure you have enough folders created to hold out in a drought.

Now there's a thought, actually 2 thoughts. I guess I will try Overhill's Seti Cache Spy, he or you will have to direct the traffic to get me there with some good instructions.
The other thought of which I didn't give a thought is "Where is this stuff going?" Does it happen to be those folders being numbered sub-folders under Seti(which I'm using).
Since the master got me rolling I'm at about 70% crunch for the first WU, for the third time. LOL

CLI

I shut down my PC at night until the next day when I get back from work which is noon. The CLI remains running in the status bar and it asked to be shutdown at that time.
Today when I started up the Spy and Driver are working and I am about 96% for the first WU.
I know that the seti@home is running, I can see it in the task )Close Programs Windows. How do I get it on the status bar to be sure that it opened? Or maybe, the question is how do you open it the next day?
When you get the first unit done, what next?
Lot of questions, but it's the only way to learn.

Thanks

Re: One of the Rookies

I made desktop shortcuts right above the systray so I'll hopefully remember to restart as soon as defrag or reboot happens. I'm WinMe and have to manually close dos programs to reboot or shutdown.
Yep, the stuff is in the folder. Overhill can point you to Seti Cache spy and Jamilla posted it somewhere (that's where I got it just before overhill e-mailed it to me).
Number of folders=number of WU cached.
I've gotten to the point of leaving my system on 24/7 to crunch. Started getting worried when you posted first result of 8hr 49min, thought here goes someone else passing me before long One of the Rookies - Team Starfire (26) but since you are shutting down overnight maybe I'll stay ahead of you with my 13+ hr crunch average. (Do I smell a suttle goad here???)
Couple of things, came home once after a power outage and found that I did NOT lose the WU time when I restarted, the WU started at 76% completed which was a relief.
It is possible to run 2 WU at once (or 3 One of the Rookies - Team Starfire (27) or 4 One of the Rookies - Team Starfire (28) ) but it actually is much slower than running one at a time. I think overhill knows me by now, I play and see One of the Rookies - Team Starfire (29)
SetiCacheSpy is easy. I just put it in the same folder as driver and CLI and Spy and go there when I want to look at the angles coming up. Simple small program and stops me from trying to figure out how to pry the WU open to look ahead One of the Rookies - Team Starfire (30) One of the Rookies - Team Starfire (31)
I started crunching in response to Sofaking's request when DSLR had been challenged by OcUK to a race. Then a buddy here lost broadband and asked me to catch fcapes for him so I got serious. Now? have seen several clubs fall victim to DSLR and since I love this place, do what I can to contribute and wait for the next club to be passed by us (Apr 22nd???)

When the first unit gets done, if you have the autotransmit set in the driver, it will send it and replace it with a new unit. I've played with that too One of the Rookies - Team Starfire (32)

Any questions just post them here, lots of great people to jump in and help.

Not sure how I managed to post this and not have it move up so you would see it. Something more to play with to see if I can do it again. (Got the 30 time out error but the post took).

Re: CLI

Let me try to answer some of these questions. The numbered folders are the cached wu's. It is not necessary for seti to be in the task bar when using setispy or driver, they hide the client and they will reside in the system tray. I do not start setispy while crunching but use it to but the .sah files in the main seti folder so setiwatch can monitor progress of all my networked computers (setiwatch looks at the state.sah file and without setispy I would have to tell setiwatch which numbered folder to look in). If you uncheck the hide client box in setispy and setidriver you will then see seti on the task bar.

Re: One of the Rookies

If you would like to monitor the status of your cache you can use my program SETI Cache Spy.

»chslatin.tripod.com/seti.html

I was going to release an updated and smarter version (due to Rxdoxx!!!), but have been too busy lately to finish it up. This should do for now, however!! Good luck!;)

Re: CLI

Yep, got that with the folders when I added to my cache. I unchecked the hide client and see what your saying. But I checked it back again.
Got my other PC running with it now also.
Thanks for the help
How do you get these message icons doubled up or changed in the text of the messages. Looked in how-to and don't see any references to it. Tried one with the [img] [/img] but that didn't work.

You must put a space after the .exe for it to work.
